Standard Response Protocol: A Community Collaboration for School Safety
In 2012, Hays County including the Office of Emergency Management, Sheriff’s Office and the City of San Marcos to adopt an aggressive stance to preventing and mitigating an active shooter incident in our county. We began with an idea of “One County, One Protocol”. We were able to obtain collaboration with all of our county school districts and held our first drill in 2013.Learning Objectives and Participant Outcomes
Hays County has attained 100% participation from all first responders & all school districts. We have trained over 200,000 people & will continue.Learning Objectives
- The attendee will establish goals for community and school safety and begin collaboration with area partners
- The attendee will identify the most effective manner of communicating with the public regarding their safety plan
- The attendee will understand the importance of "Avoid, Deny, Defend" and how it saves lives
Participant Outcomes
- The attendee will be able to address the problem faced by schools and first responders when common language is not used
- The attendee will understand the need for community collaboration and partnerships to establish a comprehensive, effective program
- The attendee will be provided a framework to begin discussions on how to establish a program
