Dr. Smith is currently the Operational Medical Director for both the Arlington County Fire and Police Department, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine, and an attending physician at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA. He has spent the last 15 years developing training and programs to address regional emergency preparedness and operational gaps in the National Capital Region.In his career, he has beenthe operational medical director for the former National Medical Response Team – National Capitol Region where he helped to develop new medical response models to atypical disasters in the NCR, and was a medical team manager for the Virginia Task Force-1 Urban Search and Rescue team. Additionally, he has served as the Medical Director for large-scale events such as the National Marathon, the Nation’s Triathlon, the AT&T National Golf Tournament, and the 2011 USGA US Open Championship.He serves as a member of the federal Interagency Board and as a subject matter expert for the DHS/FBI/NCTC Joint Counter Terrorism Awareness Workshop Series. In his current position as OMD for Arlington County, he oversees all medical operations, provider education, QA and medical protocols, and has developed new and innovative programs including unique operational EMS sub-specialty teams and innovative pre-hospital responses to Active Shooter and explosive scenarios. Most recently, he co-founded and now co-chairs the non-profit Committee for Tactical Emergency Casualty Care to facilitate emergency medical knowledge transfer from combat to civilian use. Dr. Smith frequently presents at national and international medical conferences and delivers training to many groups ranging from tactical to operational to hospital-based.Reed is a former EMS provider and Navy Corpsman and has strong interests in Operational & Tactical Medicine.
