Joseph Pignataro serves as the Deputy Director for the Maryland Center for School Safety.
As a State Agency, the primary mission of the Center is to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, and collaborative approach to school safety including the development of a central clearing house for information and best practices of research-based and data-driven information on effective strategies for creating and maintaining safe schools. The Center is housed at the Maryland Coordination Analysis Center.
In 1975, Pignataro began his public safety career as a volunteer firefighter in Montgomery County, Maryland. In 1981 he became a career firefighter and served in this position until 1985, when he transferred to the Montgomery County Department of Policeand servedas a patrol officer, special assignment team officer, academy instructor,district detective and as a Traffic Sergeant. Upon his retirement from MCP, he served as a Municipal Police Chief before joining the Center.
During his career with MCP, he held collateral duties as a Tactical Medic, Tactical Support Specialist and as a Security Specialist on the NMRT-NCR, serving ten days at the Pentagon site starting 09/11/01.
Pignataro continues to serve as a volunteer firefighter and is certified by the State of Maryland (MICRB) and Nationally (NFSPQB) as an emergency services instructor and has previously taught nationally for the USUHS CONTOMS program, as well as currently for the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute, where he teaches Incident Command, Stop the Bleed and various technical rescue and management classes.
He holds a Bachelors degree in Management as well as numerous certifications from the National Fire Service Professional Qualifications Board.

Behavioural Threat Assessment Team
As we strive to find alternative ways to maintain a positive, safe, learning environment, and moving beyond the traditional ways, we advocate that the person that causes the crisis needs more than mere incarceration. Behavioral Threat Assessment Team is the multi-disciplinary approach to potential crisis situations that may cause injury to the person, or the school environment. This approach will allow for the collaboration of law enforcement officers, mental health workers, social workers, and school officials to combine their resources and perspectives to investigate underlining circumstances to a person in trouble. This approach will include public and private agencies to work together to resolve issues.Learning Objectives
