Regional School Prevention and Intervention Specialist
Dr. Tarik Y. Harris joined the Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) on January 2, 2019 as one of their Regional School Prevention and Intervention Specialist. Dr. Harris territories includes Baltimore City, Howard County, Anne Arundel County and Montgomery County. Dr. Harris brings a very unique hybrid style of leadership to the center as an educator for over 23 years, in both public and private schools in Philadelphia, District of Columbia and Prince Georges’ County. Dr. Harris brings his educational experience as a Crisis Intervention Teacher, School Counselor, Adjunct Professor and School Administrator. Dr. Harris values student learning in safe environments, which promotes student growth academically, socially and emotionally. Collaborating and partnering with School Administrators, School Resource Officers, Safety and Security Personal, School Safety Coordinators, School Counselors and Mental Health providers are paramount to the success of our students, staff, teachers and parents.
As the School Prevention and Intervention Specialist, Dr. Harris will collaborate with regions in providing organizational, operational, and technical direction to school systems in the areas of school violence and critical incident prevention to facilitate safe schools. In addition, Dr. Harris will assist in reviewing local school system emergency plans and collaborate with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) staff, local school systems, law enforcement agencies, school administrators, designated school system security/safety directors, teachers, students, parent teacher organizations and community/business partners to provide school safety awareness and preparedness information/trainings.
The Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS), provides a coordinated and comprehensive policy for school safety in Maryland through collaboration with schools, public safety and parents. MCSS serves as a bridge of support and resourcesto our partners throughout all 24 counties of Maryland. Building strong relationships among our districts, will enhance our communication and support throughout the state of Maryland prior to any form of crisis or threat. MCSS has developed a website and tip line for the students and parents throughout the state of Maryland. The Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line is an anonymous reporting system used to report threats to safety and/or well- being of students. Students, parents, faculty, staff and members of communities throughout Maryland may use this anonymous application/web based reporting system to share their concerns. Behavioural Threat Assessment Team
As we strive to find alternative ways to maintain a positive, safe, learning environment, and moving beyond the traditional ways, we advocate that the person that causes the crisis needs more than mere incarceration. Behavioral Threat Assessment Team is the multi-disciplinary approach to potential crisis situations that may cause injury to the person, or the school environment. This approach will allow for the collaboration of law enforcement officers, mental health workers, social workers, and school officials to combine their resources and perspectives to investigate underlining circumstances to a person in trouble. This approach will include public and private agencies to work together to resolve issues.Learning Objectives
