Intersection Performance Measures in Emerging Connected Vehicle Environments
The proliferation of connected vehicles provide a new opportunity for traffic engineers to collect performance data about transportation system elements, especially intersections. Historically, data collection at intersections has been focused on short intervals of a few hours, with a focus on a single measure, such as queue volume at regular intervals, or spot speed. Trajectory information from connected vehicles allows precision data about multiple measures (such as signal state and vehicle location) over extended periods of time. However, the market penetration rate for connected vehicles is still low and agencies may want to wait to adopt such performance measure calculation when proliferation supports reporting within acceptable error. This study compares performance measures computed from microsimulation trajectories with randomized samples representing various market penetration rates for connected vehicles. The error at a variety of cycle lengths and traffic volumes are calculated to compare across configurations. Overall, we find that travel time is a useful measure, with a small sample of connected vehicles providing low (<10%) error. Results for measures of delay are not as clear, with error rates varying across cycle length and volume configurations.

The Planning and Pilot of Smart Mobility Testing Ground for New Brunswick Innovation Hub
In this project, the research team from Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT), in collaboration with the City of New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), developed the plans and conducted pilots for establishing a new smart mobility testing ground for the New Brunswick Innovation Hub. The proposed testing ground will use roadside ADS-grade high-resolution LiDAR and computer vision sensors to collect vehicle, pedestrian, and infrastructure data to enable a wide range of pilot and testing of CAV (Connected and Automated Vehicle) applications. The data collected from the testing ground will not only enable large-scale deployment of CAV applications on legacy cars without CAV sensors or on-board units but also provide valueable inputs to existing ADS platforms to enhance their security, safety, and reliability.
